The Fastest Way Through the Airport

Transiting through airports can be a time consuming and stressful process, particularly in the United States where additional security measures are in place at already busy terminals. In order to expedite a journey through the airport, travelers may benefit from enrolling in one of two programs: TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. 

TSA PreCheck for frequent travelers

TSA PreCheck is a program that provides expedited security screening at airports in the United States. Upon enrollment in the membership scheme, domestic travelers are able to transit through security using a designated line which speeds up the process.

Travelers with a TSA PreCheck membership are not required to remove their shoes, belts, or lighter jackets. Travelers with TSA PreCheck status are also permitted to keep electronic devices and liquids in their bags while passing through security. 

TSA PreCheck is available at over 200 airports in the United States. The initial membership costs $76.75 for five years. This scheme is suitable for travelers who frequently travel on domestic flights within the United States. It also means travelers can book connecting flights that are closer together. 

Global Entry for expediting international travel

Global Entry includes all of the privileges covered by the TSA PreCheck as well as further benefits for those traveling internationally. Travelers enrolled in Global Entry are spared the long lines upon return at customs. Subject to the airport, they will clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection using dedicated kiosks or expedited desks. The Global Entry Mobile Application also allows eligible members to submit their travel documents and photo securely using their smartphone. 

Global Entry is granted to pre-approved, low-risk travelers. All applicants must undergo a background check and an in-person interview in advance of being accepted for the program. Once approved, it’s often possible to renew Global Entry without repeating the interview. 

There is a $120 non-refundable application fee to apply for a five-year Global Entry membership. A number of premium credit card providers will reimburse this fee. The Global Entry service is available at all major airports in the United States.

Value of Global Entry

Global Entry is a valuable asset for travelers who travel internationally. Although popular with regular travelers, it’s worth considering for those who travel overseas as well as less frequently – for example, one or two times per year – but who would prefer to save time and hassle upon return. 

Another perk of Global Entry is that this membership permits use of Smartgate systems and electronic gates in select countries, such as Australia and New Zealand. 

Note that Global Entry is only granted to applicants on an individual basis. It does not extend to travel companions, family members, and dependents who are each required to make their own applications for membership. Children ages 18 years and younger are granted free membership if their parent (or legal guardian) is enrolled in Global Entry.
