The most luxurious way to explore Southern India.
March 28, 2025
The Golden Chariot is a luxurious sleeper train that offers the most opulent way to see the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Goa in Southern India. It is named after the famous stone chariot found at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi – one of the principal sites featured on the train’s itineraries.
This extraordinary tourist train boasts lavish interiors inspired by the tastes of royal dynasties of Southern India and the architectural heritage of the Hoysala and Mysore kingdoms. All 44 sleeper cabins are equipped with vintage trimmings, high-quality bedding, and private bathrooms. There are two fine-dining restaurants onboard, Nalapaka and Ruchi, serving gourmet Indian gastronomy and international cuisine. A cocktail lounge and a spa further enhance the sumptuous onboard experience.
The Golden Chariot services three carefully curated routes covering a medley of heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural hotspots. Several excursions are optional, providing passengers with the opportunity to see everything or strike a balance between sightseeing and relaxation.
This 7-day/6-night journey on the Golden Chariot calls at Bengaluru, Bandipur National Park, Mysore, Halebidu, Chikkamagaluru, Hampi, Badami, and Goa.
The wildlife park of Bandipur is typically explored on an evening safari which adds a unique twist to the Pride of Karnataka experience. Elephants are typically encountered and the luckiest travelers may spot a jungle amid the lush greenery.
Mysore Palace – the former residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore – is an architectural highlight whereas historians will relish the opportunity to wander through the complex of Hampi. This diverse itinerary also includes a tour of a coffee plantation and time to visit the beaches of Goa.
Another 7-day/6-night odyssey, the Jewels of South route covers Bengaluru, Mysore, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chettinad, Kumarakom, and Kochi.
This itinerary also includes a visit to the enchanting Mysore Palace – India’s most sought-after attraction behind the Taj Mahal. Further points of interest include the Mahabalipuram Monuments, the Athangudi tile factory, and the mansions of Chettinad. One of the most exciting excursions sees exchanging the railway tracks for an exclusive and intimate houseboat cruise with lunch in Kumarakom, the idyllic backwaters of Kerala backwaters.
Traversing Bengaluru, Bandipur, Mysore, and Hampi, this slightly shorter route of 4 days/3 nights is ideal for those seeking a brief brush with luxury.
Glimpses of Karnataka focuses on the state’s evocative wildlife, stunning palaces, and historic ruins. It starts with a tour of the temple town of Nanjangud followed by an evening safari at Bandipur National Park. The second and third days of the trip include an exploration of Mysore Palace and the Hampi complex of ruins before returning to Bengaluru on the fourth day.
All three Golden Chariot itineraries start and finish in the city of Bengaluru (formerly known as Bangalore). In order to avoid the summer heat, all Golden Chariot excursions are scheduled between the months of October and March. This is a tight window and advance planning is crucial.
