Explore the Timeless Charms of Giurgiu and Transylvania

Step into Romanian history and mythology at these stunning castles.

October 18, 2024

Nestled on the banks of the Danube River, Giurgiu serves as a gateway to one of Romania’s most enchanting regions: Transylvania. While Giurgiu’s quiet charm and riverside beauty offer a peaceful start to your journey, the spellbinding landscapes and legendary history of Transylvania captivate travelers' imagination.

Giurgiu: The Gateway to Romania

Giurgiu may be a smaller, lesser-known city, but its proximity to Bucharest and the Danube River makes it an ideal starting point for travelers looking to explore southern Romania. The town is a perfect place to slow down, enjoy the river views, and soak in Romanian culture before setting off into the heart of Transylvania. One of Giurgiu’s hidden gems is the nearby Comana Nature Park, a beautiful escape into wetlands, forests, and wildlife, offering visitors a peaceful introduction to Romania’s natural beauty.

But the real allure for many lies beyond Giurgiu, where the region of Transylvania beckons with its stunning castles, medieval towns, and fascinating history.

Discover the Castles of Transylvania

As you journey into Transylvania, you’ll encounter some of Europe’s most magnificent castles, each steeped in history and legend.

Peles Castle

Your first stop should be the regal Peles Castle, located in the Carpathian Mountains near the town of Sinaia. Built in the late 19th century, Peles Castle is a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture and is often considered one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. Its grand rooms, intricate woodwork, and stunning mountain views transport visitors to a time of royal elegance. Once a summer residence for the Romanian royal family, Peles Castle is filled with exquisite art collections, opulent furnishings, and a deep sense of history.

Bran Castle: The Legendary Dracula Castle

No visit to Transylvania would be complete without exploring the world-famous Bran Castle, often referred to as “Dracula’s Castle.” Perched on a rocky hilltop, Bran Castle's imposing structure and eerie atmosphere evoke the legendary figure of Count Dracula, though there is little historical evidence linking Vlad the Impaler to the castle. Regardless, the castle’s Gothic architecture, secret passageways, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside make it a must-visit for history buffs and lovers of mystery alike.

Inside, you’ll find exhibitions on Romanian royalty, medieval weaponry, and, of course, the Dracula legend that has made the castle famous worldwide.

Sighişoara: The Birthplace of Vlad the Impaler

For a true immersion into Transylvania’s medieval history, head to Sighişoara, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Vlad Ţepeş, better known as Vlad the Impaler or the inspiration behind Dracula. The town of Sighişoara feels like a step back in time, with its pastel-colored buildings, cobbled streets, and medieval towers. It’s hard to believe that this picturesque town was the birthplace of one of history’s most notorious rulers.

Vlad’s home still stands in Sighişoara, now marked with a placard and transformed into a quirky restaurant called Casa Dracula. Though the restaurant may not offer an authentic historical experience, it’s a fun stop for those interested in the Dracula myth. After lunch, stroll through the town’s pedestrian-friendly Old Town, where the glorious architecture and historic atmosphere offer a glimpse into Transylvania’s past.

A Journey Through Time

Traveling through Giurgiu and the region of Transylvania is a journey through centuries of Romanian history, legend, and culture. Whether you’re exploring the majestic Peles Castle, unraveling the mysteries of Bran Castle, or wandering the storybook streets of Sighişoara, this region invites you to step into a world where time seems to stand still.
